Maria Salomea
Maria Salomea Sklodowska (or Marie Curie) was born on
November 7, 1867. She was born in Warsaw, Poland and died on July 4, 1934.
Curie’s
parents were teachers who valued education. But women in Poland could not get
university degrees. So, Maria and her sister, Bronislawa, saved enough money to
study physics, chemistry, and mathematics in France. In 1891 Maria entered the
Sorbonne, a university in Paris, then she began calling herself Marie.
Some of Curie’s
achievements were the Davy Medal, the Matteucci Medal, the Albert Medal, the Willard Gibbs Award ,
and the Cameron Prize.
Curie’s
main achievements were two Nobel Prize The 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics
for the discovery of radioactivity, and the 1911 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for
the isolation of pure radium. Also she was the first woman to win a Nobel prize
in two different fields. Curie did not realise that working with radioactive
material could make her very sick so she died of leukemia which is some sort of
cancer on July 4, 1934.
